## What an .edoc file is

An .edoc file is a signed package used in Latvia. The documents and their signatures travel together in one file. Technically it is an ASiC-E container, the same thing as an .asice file, under the name Latvian software knows.

## Open it in your browser

Use [the OkoSign checker](https://app.okosign.com/check). Choose your file and you see who signed it, when, and whether each signature is qualified. You need no account, and nothing is kept: the file is checked and forgotten.

## Open it with your own software

eParakstītājs, a free program from eparaksts.lv, opens .edoc files. DigiDoc4, free from id.ee, usually opens them too, since .edoc is the same container type as .asice. Install one, then open the file in it.

## Get the documents out

The checker shows who signed and which files are inside the package. To save a document, open the package in eParakstītājs or DigiDoc4. Saving a document does not change the package: keep the .edoc file, because the signatures live in it.

## Is the signature valid?

A qualified signature is one made with a qualified certificate, and it has the same legal effect as a handwritten one. The file itself is the proof. The checker reads it, and so do the programs above, so you never need to take our word for it.
