Smart-ID or eParaksts?

Both make qualified electronic signatures. Which one to use depends on where the other people are and what they already have.

What they have in common

  • Both make a qualified electronic signature of a person.
  • A qualified signature has the same legal effect as a handwritten one in every EU country.
  • A file signed with either can be checked anywhere: in DigiDoc4, on eparaksts.lv or with the EU’s own validator.

Smart-ID

Smart-ID is a phone app by SK ID Solutions. It works in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, so it reaches people in all three countries.

It has 1.2M users in Latvia, 1.86M in Lithuania and 0.8M in Estonia, and handles almost 100M requests a month (figures read on 5 November 2026).

eParaksts

eParaksts is Latvia’s state signing service: the eParaksts Mobile app and the eID card. Signing on eparaksts.lv and with eParaksts Mobile is free. It works with Latvian eIDs only.

eParaksts counted 16.6M signings in 2024 (figure read on 5 November 2026).

Which to choose

  • Everyone is in Latvia and has eParaksts: either works for a package (.edoc/.asice); a PDF on its own is signed with Smart-ID for now.
  • Someone is in Estonia or Lithuania, or the people are a mix: Smart-ID, which works in all three countries.
  • OkoSign signs with Smart-ID directly. A signature made with eParaksts in eParakstītājs is accepted by upload for a package (.edoc/.asice): the other person downloads the file, signs it there and uploads it back. A PDF on its own is signed with Smart-ID for now.
